Are you tired of seeing your hair thinning and falling out? Do you wish you could restore your hair to its former glory without surgery or harsh chemicals? If so, you may be interested in platelet rich plasma (PRP) treatment for hair loss.

PRP is a natural and safe method of stimulating hair growth using your own blood. PRP contains growth factors and proteins that help heal and regenerate tissues in the body. When injected into the scalp, PRP can activate dormant hair follicles and increase the blood supply to the hair roots. This can result in thicker, stronger, and healthier hair.

PRP treatment for hair loss is especially beneficial for people who suffer from androgenetic alopecia, the most common type of hair loss in both men and women. Androgenetic alopecia is caused by a genetic sensitivity to a hormone called dihydrotestosterone (DHT), which shrinks the hair follicles and makes them produce thinner and shorter hairs. Over time, this leads to a receding hairline, a bald spot on the crown, or diffuse thinning on the scalp.

PRP can counteract the effects of DHT by increasing the size and number of hair follicles, as well as the diameter and length of the hairs. Several studies have shown that PRP can significantly improve hair density, thickness, and growth rate in people with androgenetic alopecia.

PRP treatment for hair loss is a simple and minimally invasive procedure that can be done in a clinic or even in your own home. The process involves three steps:

  • First, a small amount of blood is drawn from your arm and placed in a centrifuge, a machine that spins the blood to separate its components.

  • Second, the platelet-rich plasma is extracted from the blood and prepared for injection.

  • Third, the PRP is injected into the areas of the scalp where you want to stimulate hair growth.

The whole procedure takes about an hour and does not require any anesthesia or downtime. You may experience some mild discomfort, swelling, or bruising at the injection sites, but these are temporary and usually subside within a few days. You can resume your normal activities and wash your hair as usual after the treatment.

PRP treatment for hair loss is not a one-time solution, but rather a maintenance therapy that requires repeated sessions to achieve and maintain optimal results. The number and frequency of sessions may vary depending on your individual needs and goals, but generally, you will need three to six treatments spaced four to six weeks apart, followed by maintenance treatments every four to six months.

PRP treatment for hair loss is not a miracle cure, but it can offer a natural and effective way to enhance your hair quality and appearance. PRP can also be combined with other hair loss treatments, such as medications, supplements, or hair transplants, to boost their efficacy and outcomes.

Aesthetic treatments are ever increasing in popularity and as a result more people are providing treatments, however not all practitioners are created equal. Platelet rich plasma involves re-injecting your own blood back into your body, and as a result is a low risk treatment. However, this means that anyone can buy a PRP kit online, a cheap centrifuge and pose as a trained professional! Thankfully this doesn't happen very often, however there are a few tell tail signs to look out for:

- cheap treatments, offering a treatment which is well below standard market value tells you that the PRP kit they have purchased may not be fit for purpose and may pose risks to your health and safety, such as increased risk of infection or injecting chemicals into your body that are not intended to be for re injection. The tubes that are used to take blood, say at your GP surgery or the hospital are not the same as those used for PRP, as they contain harmful chemicals that are not fit for re injection. This is a cheap way of providing PRP treatments so watch out and ask to see the kit before you go ahead with the treatment.

- no mention of professional registration on their website, this often means that they are not regulated by a professional regulatory council such as the NMC or GMC. The implications of this are far reaching, including not being professionally accountable for their actions, which makes it much harder to claim against them if anything goes wrong. Medical professionals are well placed to offer aesthetic treatments as we are trained in diagnosis, consultation and assessment which means we can make a thorough assessment of whether you are safe to proceed with treatment, whether the treatment is appropriate for you, and also to deal with any side effects or adverse outcomes of the treatment should there be any. As you would trust a nurse or a doctor in ill health, you can trust us in aesthetics as well.

- no insurance, this is a big red flag! Most insurers will not provide insurance unless the practitioner is properly trained with a affiliated training facility which has been audited by the insurance company. Unfortunately not all training is equal or adequate which can result in poor results and treatment.

- do they offer a consultation before treatment? At PRP aesthetics we ensure that all of our patients undergo consultation before treatment as we need to assess whether you are suitable for treatment, not only from a medical perspective but from a outcome perspective as well. PRP is not suitable for all types of hair loss so we need to make sure its indicated for your condition. Furthermore, we know that its a big investment, and from an ethical perspective we do not pressure our patients into having a treatment on the same day with a pushy sales pitch.

We hope this has helped to offer some insight into the PRP and aesthetics industry and allows you to make an informed and considered decision when choosing your practitioner.
